| Double crochet over single crochet? |
|
|
| Hi all, I'm making a hat and the pattern says to double crochet over single crochet. What does the "over" mean? How is that done, do I go into the stitch in the previous row? Thanks for any help.

Hi Diane19,
Welcome to the forum. Without knowing exactly what pattern you are working on, it could mean several things, but my first thought would be that you are working in rows of single crochet and then double crochet. Is that correct? If so, it just means that you work a row of single crochet, then you work a row of double crochet. If it is something different, please explain further. Hope this helps!

Hi Kathleen, the row before it is (Slip st, ch 1, sc) all in next sc, sc in next sc *(sc, ch 2, sc) all in next ch-2 space, sc in next 2 sc**, ch 1, skip next 2 sc, sc in next 2 sc, repeat from * to last 2 sc, end at **; skip last 2 sc, sc in first sc to join and form last ch-1 space.
Next row and row in question goes like this: Ch 3, 4 dc over sc, *sc in next ch-2 space**, 5 dc in next ch-1 space; repeat from * around, end at **, join with a slip st in top of ch-3.
This is a pattern from www.redheart.com, I ordered a kit for a scarf/hat from Herschnerrs and the pattern instructions came with. It is called Wavy Hat and Scarf, WR1911, designed by Katherine Eng. Maybe the pattern is somewhere on this site, I haven't looked.
I've done quite a bit of crocheting (although nothing really difficult!) and I've never seen "dc over sc". Thanks for any help! Diane

| Kathleen, thank you so much for the link to the correct pattern! I am so glad I asked for help on this forum! I completed the 17 rows of the other pattern the other night (just dc where they told me to dc over sc) and no way did this hat look complete....would be maybe big enough for an 8 year old and no brim to turn over. 26 rows makes much more sense. Hope they didn't send out a lot of the wrong pattern! I will rip it out and start over! Diane
