Hi, I’m Kathleen Sams, Red Heart Ambassador. I get to travel around the country to teach and demonstrate knitting and crocheting, and I meet wonderful people along the way. We share ideas, wonderful stories and in the process I learn so many new things. Join me in my travels and tell me what type of  knitting and crocheting projects you are working on. How many do you have hidden in your closet…or under your bed?

My most recent trip was a visit to the Stitches South in Atlanta, GA.  Oh my gosh!  What a fabulous show!  This was a first time venue in Atlanta and a first time for us to have a vendor selling Red Heart Yarn.  Terri and I met and talked with lots of great people, saw some old friends and made new ones.  We showed a variety of projects, from kids sweaters to afghans but real crowd pleasers were the Eco friendly products.  People were amazed at how elegant the Refreshing Throw was with its soft touch and muted pastel hues (LW1669 Refreshing Throw) or the Spa set ….. who would have guessed that this was made from recycled T-shirts (LW1645).  Another big hit was the Cardie to Love (WR1825), knit in Bamboo Wool.  This cardigan was also in the fashion show and turned lots of heads.  For all you thread lovers, Aunt Lydia's Bamboo Thread is great for all types of projects.  There is a beautiful romantic wrap in the May/June 2009 issue of Crochet Today that is great for wearing to a wedding or just setting on the beach.  When people saw it, the thread flew off the racks.  The younger set loved the wonderfully simple cabled hoodie (LW1603) made in Red Heart Soft.  Let’s not forget about socks!  Have you tried the Heart & Sole sock yarn?  I love the way it works up in great stripping patterns or prints and it’s not just for socks (LW1619, LW1613LW1611 Baby pullover).  It makes great garments also.

With the school year coming to an end, many of my new friends are planning on summer projects.  I'm working on a knitted wrap in the bamboo thread.  Yes, you can knit with this also......it makes beautiful lace.  I'll share it with you along the way.  What are you working on?  Send me your ideas.

I think it is great you are traveling around. I would love to see
some visits to high schools to start the youngs girls and college
young ladies to start a great trend. I just started blanket making
in my area at church we are starting out slow and in a very small
group but we are hoping to increase this coming year. We are making blankets knitted, crochet, and quilted for hospitals and
a shelter for teens. The teens get a blanet size for a twin to keep
and take with them where ever they go.
Hope to keep you updated and looking for samples of yarn or dye
lot mistakes at a discount to help our group out to make more for the needs of others. Any suggestions.

I really wish I was you traveling all around and learning even more about knitting and crocheting, and getting to see all the wonderful pieces made from all the gorgeous wool. I alo really like a lot of the patterns listed. I will have to learn to crochet in order to be able to do the crocheting pieces.
Keep up the good work.

Hi, Kathleen. Enjoyed meeting you at Stitches. A lifetime fan of Redheart (and believe me, I knitted everything from acrylic to buffalo to yak) I am thrilled to see Redheart getting hip! Just went on the site to check out Zoomy and noticed that no mention of the recycled plastic bottles is made. That's the coolest part of the whole thing! A friend who went with me to Stitches has vowed over the years that she'd never buy acrylic, but she's very excited about the recycling you guys do. Maybe I missed it somewhere on the site, but I'm telling you, you need to talk about that more!

Good luck!

I've just gotten back into crocheting since I've just retired. I'm pulling out boxes from my closet looking for yarn! Where did it all come from? I never used to care for the mix of colors but now all the yarn companies have some gorgeous varigated yarn colors. Have looked on this site and can't find any free patterns for pot holders.
I've just finished a clutch purse for my granddaughter and starting on another one for her sister in the trellis ribbon yarn. Trying to learn to knit a scarf with chenelle but its too tight. I couldn't crochet with it because I couldn't see the stitches with the chenelle. I should mention I'm trying to learn to knit by myself.

Hi, Kathleen! Just wanted you to know that none of the links to your blog entry entitled Wraps work. I'd sure like to hear more about that wrap you made with my favorite yarn, Red Heart Collage. Can you Share that pattern? Thanks! LoraG

I really like the Super Saver yarn 7 oz. Seems like alot of the stores here in the Dayton, Ohio area are not carrying a wide variety like they use to. I have looked on the red heart.com but can't find 2 colors in the super saver size any suggestions?

Hi Kathleen,

I'm new at this, I had a friend teach me how to crochet some basic stitches and I also took a simple course through a night class some years ago. It helped me to at least read a crochet pattern, in the late 70's I found a beautiful afghan pattern in either Family Circle or a Womens' Day, it was a basic granny square surrounded by rainbow stripes, I haven't been able to find it anywhere, I was able to use balls of yarn that I was able to buy at the Safeway grocery store for about $1.99 a 200-400gr ball? Anyway have you come across a pattern similar to this and could you let me know how I could go about locating it.

If you give me a little time, I might be able to find it. I have most of those books from from the 1960's on. It will take me a little time to dig through all of them, but I'll see what I can turn up.
