Giving Tuesday

Give back to the community on #GivingTuesday, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Falling on November 29 in 2016, the national campaign encourages everyone to make a difference. Here are some ideas on ways you can help.

What is #GivingTuesday?

Established by the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation in 2012, #GivingTuesday encourages all sorts of charitable actions. For example, you can organize a food drive on your block and give the donations to the local food pantry, or donate toys to a toy drive. You can also put your knitting and crochet skills to good use and make projects for the charities listed below. Most of the organizations on the list accept handmade goods year round, so you don't need to wait until the holidays to give back. Many groups also accept monetary donations in order to do things like ship the handmade items or purchase supplies.

American Red Cross

#StitchAHug to support the Red Cross by knitting or crocheting a Red Heart Cares blanket and donating it to your local Red Cross chapter. These blankets will be handed out to populations the Red Cross helps, including families devastated by house fires, those affected by natural disasters, veterans, and more.

List of Charities

Please read the donation guidelines of the organization you want to donate to before you start your project. There may be restrictions in the type of yarn, the size of the project, or other information.

Find more great projects and charities you can donate to in our Hats for Charity ebook, our Stitch a Hug with Red Heart Facebook group, and our Stitch a Hug Pinterest board.

Suggested Patterns

We have a dozen suggested patterns below, but remember you can always find additional patterns in the Free Patterns section of redheart.com. Plus, you can now filter the patterns to see patterns that are good for charity. As you choose your pattern, take into consideration any restrictions by the charity you are going to donate to.

Share your projects with us in the comments and on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, and Twitter) using the hashtag #StitchAHug. We love seeing how you've helped!
