A cute baby blanket, hand knitted with love, is the ideal gift for a newborn or older baby.
There are so many free baby blanket knitting patterns that it may take you some time to decide which design to make! From bold stripes or chevrons to delicate lace or heart patterns, from easy garter stitch to more complicated cable patterns, the choice is yours.
Choosing the Right Yarn
Use soft baby yarns especially designed to be close to babies' delicate skin, such as Bunches of Hugs and Soft Baby Steps. These yarns are great for busy parents because they are so easy to care for - they can be machine washed and dried.

Knit a Lasting Memory and Gift
A soft, warm, comforting blanket makes a lovely gift for a baby, helping him or her to drift off to sleep peacefully. Many children grow very attached to their baby blankets, sleeping with them for many years to come. When the baby is older, the blanket can double up as a crawling pad, play mat or bed throw.
Knit a baby blanket in just one color, or use multi-colored yarn to give a self-striped effect. You could also combine several different colors.
Pastel shades are a great choice for babies, so why not knit a pretty striped blanket in two or more coordinating colors? Choose combinations of green, blue and white for a boy or lilac, pink and white for a girl.
Other the other hand, babies also like looking at bright colors. Red is one of the first colors they can see clearly, so knit a modern design with a bold chevron, zigzag or striped pattern in vibrant shades of red, orange and yellow to stimulate the development of the baby's color vision.
Knit a blanket in one piece or sew knitted squares together to make a larger blanket.
If you'd like to try an alternative way of knitting a baby blanket, choose a project that starts at one corner and finishes at the opposite corner. You increase on each row until you reach the center and then decrease on each row until you reach the end. If you knit the blanket in bulky weight yarn, you'll finish it in no time!
A traditional lace pattern is the ideal choice for a white blanket, suitable for either a boy or girl. You can start knitting as soon as the pregnancy is announced!
A lacy blanket with a scalloped edge would make a very pretty stroller blanket. Or, show a special baby how much she is loved by knitting a delightful blanket with a lacy heart pattern.
A hooded blanket knitted in a super-soft yarn is great for a baby to snuggle up in and keep warm after his bath.
If you're looking for an unusual pattern, a spider's web design that starts at the center and is knitted in rounds is a great choice. It would also make a great play mat.
If you've just learned to knit or if you're looking for a super-easy project, choose a pattern that consists of just one row knitted in medium weight yarn. Or, practice your skills by making a blanket with a simple basket weave pattern.
