Checkerboard Textures Throw

Welcome! We hope you join us in the Checkerboard Textures Throw Crochet Along! Beginning on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 and every two weeks after for the next few months we'll post a new crocheted square pattern along with tips and pictures to help you learn the stitch. Crochet the squares along with us, and by the end you'll have a completed afghan! Share your progress and ask questions on Facebook and Twitter. For every new square, we'll select a winner for a prize package.

Checkerboard Textures Throw Prize Pack

Afghan design

Ten textured squares and ten granny squares make up the afghan. After you make all twenty squares, we have a border pattern for the entire afghan. You can put your squares together in a different order than we did or alter the pattern so you only have textured squares and no granny squares, for example. This is your afghan, so personalize it! At the end of the crochet-along we'll post the complete afghan pattern.

Supplies Needed

  • RED HEART® Soft®: 13 balls 9440 Light Grey Heather (or color of your choice)
  • Susan Bates Crochet Hooks: 4mm [US G-6] (for Granny Squares) and 3.75mm [US F-5] (for all other Squares)
  • Stitch markers (optional), yarn needle

I did have a submit final

I did have a submit final date on my desk calender and it was a couple weeks ago (wouldn't you know it I usually keep the torn off months but not June) I was so stressed because I didn't have my border finished so I didn't submit my picture-very disapointed in this I enjoyed the different stitches but...makes we weary about doing the other "contest"

I did have a submit final

Hi, You're welcome to share your pictures with us on Facebook! www.facebook.com/redheartyarns We're posting completed patterns in an album every few days and we love seeing everyone's creativity.

The crochet-along giveaway was based on entering your name and email into the entry form and was open to everyone, no matter how far along they were on their afghan. That giveaway has ended.

If you're talking about the knit-along we're doing as the other "contest", the giveaway for it is for the yarn for the knit along afghan plus a year's membership to Creativebug. You can enter at any time using the Rafflecopter form at the bottom of each knit-along blog post. http://www.redheart.com/blog/join-us-cabled-afghan-knit-along

This last pattern, we could use help doing these stitches, mainly the row 3 where we have to figure out where to put our hook to do the pattern.

I have really enjoyed this!

Thank you

Hi, Welcome! We're sure we'll have other crochet alongs sometime in the future, but we can't guarantee one with this exact format. All of the materials for this crochet along will stay on the blog, so you can go ahead and make the afghan on your own time!

Blocking Squares

I can't wait to see pictures of everyones completed afghans! Are any of you blocking your squares before putting them together?

missy34's picture

willijen

I blocked my squares just to make sure they are all the same size.

iluvcrochet's picture

blocking squares

I don't usually block squares for afghans, however, the squares for this project haven't worked up intended gauge, so I'm still debating whether to block or not. Did you block, and if so, did blocking yield satisfactory results?

missy34's picture

Hello iluvcrochet

I blocked my squares because some were off by less or more than 1/3 stitch. Blocking help me make all the squares even.

Crochet Along

Will the joining instructions be added to the picture tutorial or will they be separate in 2 weeks like the squares? Thanks, I have loved doing this CAL and look forward to doing more!!

Crochet Along

The joining instructions and the final border will have a blog tutorial on June 25 when the overall pattern is published.

Number of squares.

Should I have 10 or 11 squares made? I have crocheted all 10 squares listed above.

redheart's picture

Number of squares.

Hi, All of the squares have now been posted! There are 10 textured squares patterns and you make one textured square in each pattern. You also make 10 of the granny square pattern.

Corinneg423's picture

stripes

Hello, I am enjoying this crochet-along very much, but I have to be honest, I'm getting a bit tired of stripes stripes stripes!! Will there be any more patterns like the crossover and popcorn squares? I like those bigger, unique stitches for a more bold texture.

sandeleh's picture

numbering of squares?

I was confused when I checked the numbers of the squares I have currently. They number 1-8, then 11. I thought at first I was missing some squares, but after thinking about it, I've decided that the textured squares are 1-10, with the granny being #11. Did I figure it out? If so, I won't worry about the "missing" two squares until the end of the CAL! :D

redheart's picture

numbering of squares?

Hi, You're absolutely correct! Number 11 is the granny square, and 1-10 are the textured squares. Textured squares 9 and 10 have not yet been released.

marymeachum's picture

Needle Size

Truthfully, I am loving this program. My only comment is that apparently I am a very tight stitcher, because I am having to use the G hook for all the squares to get them the right size for the 10" square. As the pattern says "use any size hook to obtain the guage" I can keep within the correct number of stitches this way and the square flattens without blocking. Is anyone else having this issue, (I won't call it a problem as the squares seem to be all right)?

Malaea68's picture

Hook Size

You are not alone! I too have had to up the size of my hook for each square by 1 letter. I have had the same issue with every pattern I have downloaded from Red Heart. I guess we just have a tight loop in our crocheting...

Crochet Along

I chose to make up the last 3 squares and the finished edge in order to be done early and give this wonderful project to my wonderful mother for Mother's Day! I can't figure out how to post pictures and make sure I'm still in the contest. For the last 3 squares I did a front post staggered (looks like diamond pattern), basket weave, and the star stitch. For the edge I did 2 rows of single crochet,1 row of granny strait, and 2 rows of single crochet. I loved this Crochet Along and can't wait for the next one!

How many squares so far ?

There are comments about finishing but only the Granny square plus 7 textured squares are showing up. Did I miss three textured squares ?

redheart's picture

How many squares so far ?

Hi, No, you didn't miss any squares! Some people want to finish the blanket early to give it as a gift, so they are making duplicates of textured squares and assembling the blanket. We still have two more textured squares to post, plus the assembly and border instructions.

Finishing

I can't find the instructions to finish putting this together where can I find them?

redheart's picture

Finishing

Hi, The finishing instructions haven't been posted yet, but you're welcome to start! We arranged our throw in 5 rows with 2 textured squares and 2 granny squares in each row in a checkerboard pattern.

You're welcome to arrange your squares however you wish. If you want to copy our design, we started with the first square (LW4132-1 Cross-Stitched Square) at the top left, then going right there was a granny square, then square 2, then another granny square. The next row started with a granny square, then square 3, and so on in the checkerboard pattern.

We suggest whipstitching the squares together, but if you have another method of finishing that you prefer you are welcome to use it.

How much yarn?

Hello all, I'm planning to use 3 colors for this project, one of which is a multi. Can someone please tell me how much yarn it takes to make the 10 Granny Squares? I want to make all the Granny Squares in multi, and everything else with the 2 coordinated solids. Before I start I want to make sure I have enough yarn. Thank you in advance.

tnclassic1's picture

re: How much yarn?

I know this is a bit late but I'm doing the same thing as you with 2 solids and a multi. The yarn I'm using, the multi has 192 yds. and I get 2 granny squares with maybe a half granny square worth left over. I hope this helps.

Malaea68's picture

How much yarn?

Thank you for replying. I have been able to get almost 3 granny squares from each of my multi, and about 4 patterned squares for each of my solids. I'm using Super Saver yarn, and it's been great! The multi (Wildflowers) is really soft, I'm trying to find something else to make it with since I like it so much... I'm really looking forward to getting it all put together.

redheart's picture

How much yarn?

Hi, Another fan may be able to answer your question in more detail. We only have the total for the entire throw, which is 13 balls of solid-color Soft. If you want to be conservative, you can ignore the border and say that it will take 6.5 balls of solid-color Soft to make the throw. You will need to figure out how many balls or skeins of your yarn it will take, since our mulitcolored yarn usually comes in smaller balls.

Hi, The squares aren't sent out anywhere. They are on the homepage of the website the day they are released, and we put them on Facebook and Pinterest. You can also always search for LW4132 in the search box and see all of the patterns and blog posts.

Crochet a long

I am anxiously awaiting the next pattern. I thought it was supposed to be released on the 16th but I haven't seen it yet. I have 6 pattern squares and the granny squares. This is my first crochet a long and now I wish I would have waited until all the patterns were released. I tend to keep up with something till it's done and I like to complete it ASAP.
