(m1) means - make one - which means to increase one stitch
M1 is a type of increase
M1 is a type of increase stitch.
If you look at your knitting, you can see a little "bar" that runs between the last stitch on the right needle and the first stitch on the left needle. Pick this bar up on the point of the left needle, then knit through the back of it just as you would knit through the back loop of a regular stitch. This will increase the work by one stitch and it makes a virtually invisible increase.
