Listed below are standard abbreviations and symbols that you may find in crochet patterns on redheart.com. All standard abbreviations used in a particular pattern are also listed at the end of the pattern. If a pattern contains unusual combinations of stitches, these will be explained in the Special Abbreviations section at the beginning of the pattern.

A, B, C, etc = Color A, Color B, Color C, etc.
beg = beginning
bet = between
blk = block
Bpdc = back post double crochet
ch(s) = chain(s)
cm = centimeter(s)
dec = decrease
dc = double crochet
dc2tog = double crochet two stitches together
dtr = double treble
Fsc = Foundation single crochet
Fpdc = front post double crochet
hdc = half double crochet
hdc2tog = half double crochet two stitches together
inc = increase
mm = millimeter(s)
pm = place (stitch) marker
rep = repeat
RS = right side
sc = single crochet
sc2tog = single crochet two stitches together
sk = skip
sl = slip
sp = space
st = stitch(es)
tr = treble
tr2tog = treble crochet two stitches together
WS = wrong side
yo = yarn over
* or ** = repeat whatever follows the * or ** as indicated
[ ] = work directions in brackets the number of times indicated
