Abbreviations and Symbols - Knit Abbreviations

Listed below are standard abbreviations and symbols that you may find in knitting patterns on redheart.com. All standard abbreviations used in a particular pattern are also listed at the end of the pattern. If a pattern contains unusual combinations of stitches, these will be explained in the Special Abbreviations section at the beginning of the pattern.

A, B, C, etc = Color A, Color B, Color C, etc.
beg = beginning
bet = between
blk = block
cm = centimeter(s)
dec = decrease
inc = increase
k = knit
k2tog = knit two together decrease
kfb or k1fb = knit into front and back
M1 = Make 1 increase
mm = millimeter(s)
p = purl
p2tog = purl two stitches together
pm = place (stitch) marker
psso = pass slipped stitch over
rep = repeat
RS = right side
sk = skip
sl = slip
ssk = slip, slip, knit decrease
sp = space
st = stitch(es)
WS = wrong side
yo = yarn over
* or ** = repeat whatever follows the * or ** as indicated
[ ] = work directions in brackets the number of times indicated
